CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa, Feb. 2, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- United Fire Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:UFCS) today reported that fourth quarter operating earnings are estimated to be in a range between $1.31 and $1.37 per diluted share. This estimate is based on an anticipated GAAP combined ratio of 83.6 percent for the quarter. These numbers are unaudited.
"As is often the case with our underlying book of business, fourth quarter was a benign quarter for catastrophic events," stated Randy A. Ramlo, President and Chief Executive Officer. "A lack of significant catastrophic events, favorable claim activity, and significant favorable reserve development on prior accident year claims has resulted in an estimated GAAP combined ratio of 83.6 percent."
"Our complete earnings results will be released on February 17, 2015; however, in the interest of fair disclosure," continued Ramlo, "our results varied significantly from analysts' consensus numbers. It is our policy going forward to consider significant variances from analysts' operating earnings estimates as "material" information and subject to pre-announcement. It will be at managements' discretion to determine what constitutes materiality on an individual basis."
"Though not relevant to earnings, our book value per share as of December 31, 2014 will be impacted by changes in the valuation of our retirement benefit plans and therefore, we will not achieve the book value appreciation we expected."
United Fire Group, Inc. will report earnings before the market opens on February 17, 2015 and will host a conference call to discuss its financial results at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time on that date.
