Uber continued its expansion into the food-delivery business after launching UberEATS, a food delivery service in Barcelona on Wednesday.
The car-service behemoth launched the same service in Los Angeles last August as UberFRESH. "For its first launch outside of the United States, Uber has selected Barcelona under a new name," the company said in a blog post.
Users can get food delivered to them in less than 10 minutes from restaurants listed in Plateselector, a Barcelona-based restaurants website. "In the same time it takes you to walk up Las Ramblas you can open up your Uber app, choose your meal and get it delivered to an address of your choice," the company said.
Some restaurants, including Surf House Barcelona, see great opportunity in this venture. "With the UberEATS platform, I am creating opportunities to grow and reach new customers, so more people can know about Surf House Barcelona," said Alex Knoepfel, owner of the restaurant.
The company also announced that it has hired over 10,000 U.S. veterans as part of its UberMILITARY initiative, which looks to hire 50,000 veterans as drivers by March 2016. The initiative was launched last September.
Correction: This story has been updated to reflect the correct launch date for UberFRESH in Los Angeles. It was launched in August of last year.
