DJJ Technologies, MASS Comm Selected to Upgrade Long Island Fire District With a Fully Redundant Centralized Network

LONG ISLAND, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- DJJ Technologies and MASS Communications today announced that they are completing a four-site fiber network rollout to support the North Massapequa Fire District's voice infrastructure. The custom deployment is fully redundant, with the ability to transfer its 911 system to a remote site in the event of a disaster.

The announcement comes on the eve of the Long Island Fire, Rescue & EMS Mega Show, New York State's largest rescue and emergency medical service (EMS) expo.

"The need to upgrade our infrastructure came about after Hurricane Sandy when we lost some of our network capabilities," said Ralph Raymond, North Massapequa Fire District commissioner, who oversaw the network design effort. "While our 911 system never went down, our backup processes were manual and took a lot of effort. We wanted the new architecture to automatically provide backup with no latency."

In 2014, the Long Island-based fire district responded to 1,100 emergency calls, with two-thirds of the calls for medical emergencies. The fire district includes three fire houses that serve an estimated 35,000 people in a geographic footprint that includes 6,600 homes and 1,500 businesses.

Working in collaboration with the fire district, DJJ Technologies and MASS Comm designed a cost-effective solution using an existing fiber ring and CAT 3 infrastructure at three of the sites. The solution includes a new centralized voicemail and IP telephony network. A dedicated IP link is being deployed to the fire district's main location with broadband connectivity to remote sites using dual service providers for redundancy.

DJJ Technologies, an Avaya Platinum Authorized Business Partner for voice, video and data, already serves the networking needs of at least 30 fire departments in Long Island.

"We know the model we developed with MASS Comm could be used to support many more fire districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties," says Jerry Cummins, senior account executive, DJJ Technologies. "Responsiveness was key – we were able to provide a resilient voice solution with hardware and circuits."

"We were able to come to the table with a solution that met the fire district's needs from a redundancy and resiliency standpoint, as well as meeting their budgetary needs," adds David Schwed, General Counsel and CIO, MASS Communications.

An engineering innovator, MASS Comm designs the ideal voice and data solution environment for its customers while embracing a diversity strategy that includes dedicated and broadband backup to ensure clients remain connected – no matter what.

That mindset resonates well with first responders like North Massapequa Fire District. Raymond says the new system "gives us the ability to relocate our whole telephone and 911 system to any remote site at a moment's notice without losing any functionality, including caller ID, which is critical for dispatchers to have when responding to an emergency call."

Raymond predicts that the solution will accommodate his fire district's growth long term.

"As our population increases and we need to move to a bigger facility or relocate our dispatch center, this solution gives us that flexibility. We can add more phone lines and locations with very little effort. This system, both the design and the equipment, will carry us well into the future," he concludes.
