WILMINGTON, Del., March 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq:IDCC), a mobile technology research and development company, today announced that its InterDigital Europe unit has been awarded key roles and received funding from Horizon 2020 (H2020), the €80 billion European research and innovation program.
The two collaborative projects that kicked off research activities with the funding are known as POINT (iP Over IcN the betTer IP) and RIFE (aRchitecture for an Internet For Everybody). InterDigital Europe's roles in these projects include Technology Manager in POINT and architecture lead for RIFE.
The goal of the POINT project is to develop technology, innovations, and business value chains that leverage emerging information centric networking technology (ICN) in commercially viable ways. The project is based on the hypothesis that many current IP-based applications can run 'better' on an ICN-based network than on current IP networks. The POINT project brings together a strong consortium of nine commercial and university partners from five EU countries.
Project RIFE leverages advanced emerging networking technology to address the major societal challenge of providing affordable internet access to those who cannot afford it by solving the technological challenge to increase the efficiency of the underlying transport networks and the involved architectures and protocols. The RIFE solution will harness unused transmission capacity, combined with placing content caches and service functionality closer to the user. Project RIFE also boasts a strong consortium of seven enterprise and academic technology partners.
"The emergence of new technologies like software defined networking, network function virtualization and deep content caching will make possible whole new paradigms and approaches to the Internet. This so-called programmable network is what we have been calling the Living Network at InterDigital for some time now. We believe this will form the cornerstone of future 5G networks," said Alan Carlton, Vice President of InterDigital Europe.
InterDigital Europe opened in London in 2013 with special focus on 5G research and development and partner collaboration in H2020 and other initiatives.
