More than 200 business executives attended the gala reception at the Stony Hill Inn in Hackensack. Martin Kafafian, chairman of the CIANJ board of directors, presented awards to the honorees. "For most of these companies their donations, kindness and community outreach are part of their corporate culture -- their mission," said Kafafian. "The public at large is often unaware of the magnitude and scope of the good works. This reception is our way of shining a spotlight on 'Companies that Care.'"

Middlesex Water Company is involved in numerous charitable efforts including serving as a major sponsor of the Bowl for Hunger, an event conceived by New Jersey's 19th Legislative District Assemblyman Craig J. Coughlin as a way to raise community awareness and funds to support local food banks. Over the past year, employees at Middlesex Water Company have also removed litter along the Middlesex Greenway in Edison, NJ, planted flowers at Fords Public Library as part of National Public Lands Clean Up Day, donated gently worn coats to Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen, and partnered with Habitat for Humanity in a "homebuild" project in the City of Perth Amboy, among other efforts.

"We're pleased that in some small way we're able to support our customers and the communities where they reside. These efforts not only reinforce our century old commitment to making a difference in the communities where we provide essential utility services, but also foster teamwork and leadership among our employee volunteers," said Dennis W. Doll, Middlesex Water President and CEO.

The CIANJ is a statewide business advocacy organization based in Paramus, New Jersey. It represents more than 900 member companies from every business sector. The associations asked businesses to tell stories of their good works. These accounts, as well as photographs of the selected honorees, are featured in a special "Companies that Care" section in the March issue of COMMERCE Magazine, the media arm of the association.
