The eighth installment of the lucrative Universal Pictures movie franchise "Fast & Furious" is slated for an April 14, 2017 release, Variety reports.
One of the movies' stars, Vin Diesel, confirmed the next installment to cinema owners at Universal's CinemaCon panel in Las Vegas on Thursday, Variety reported.
The latest movie in the series, "Furious 7," took in an additional $29.1 million over the weekend in North America, for a three-week global total of $1.15 billion, the New York Times reported this week.
According to the Variety report, Diesel choked back tears at the Las Vegas convention -- it was at the same event in 2013 that he and Paul Walker, who died in a car crash the same year, announced the seventh "Fast & Furious" movie.
Universal Pictures is part of NBC Universal, which also owns CNBC.
