athenahealth Connects Care Through Community Giving

WATERTOWN, Mass., May 1, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- athenahealth, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based services and mobile applications for medical groups and health systems, today announced the opening of its annual grants cycle. From May 1st through July 1st, non-profit organizations connecting care in the metro Boston, San Francisco, Atlanta, Austin, Princeton, Chennai (India), and coastal Maine areas are invited to apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, with awards totaling $300,000. The grants are an initiative of the company's corporate citizenship program, athenaGives, which enables connection to quality health care in its communities by partnering with local non-profit organizations.

To date, athenahealth has donated over one million dollars to like-minded organizations, including The Family Van, a mobile clinic providing wellness and prevention services to Boston's neediest communities. "athenahealth and The Family Van share a vision for removing barriers to accessible, connected care," said Jennifer Bennet, Executive Director of The Family Van. "Support from athenahealth allows us to be a vital linkage to clinical settings, ensuring that our clients in high risk neighborhoods will live healthier lives by preventing and managing chronic disease."

athenahealth also donates its cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) service, athenaClinicals®, to qualified charitable organizations in accordance with applicable regulations.

"Service-offering donations are more important than ever before," said Glenda Lerma, Director of Operations at Faith Family Clinic, a non-profit clinic in San Antonio, Texas that serves the working uninsured. athenahealth's services have helped us engage with our patients, manage our Chronic Disease Management Program, and connect our patients' care so that they not only benefit from a steady provider relationship, but also stay out of the hospital and emergency department. We're able to deliver care with dignity, coordination, and—ultimately—cost savings. A cloud-based system is particularly conducive to charitable health organizations' infrastructure, which relies on the help of volunteers. athenahealth is an out-of-the-box solution for those of us working on the front lines of health care who still want to be backed by the knowledge and power of a national network."

Since athenaGives' founding in 2010, the company has helped free and charitable health clinics like Faith Family Clinic document and connect care for more than 15,000 patients in the U.S. and abroad.

"athenahealth is committed to connecting care, not just amongst our traditional client base, but for all segments of the communities in which we live and work," said Jonathan Bush, CEO, athenahealth. Organizations like Faith Family Clinic and The Family Van are fixing health care from the ground up—plugging holes in the system and delivering care in some of the most extreme conditions. Vendors play an important part in facilitating this noble work. We at athenahealth are grateful to maximize the impact of our service and provide the tools these leaders need to execute their missions."
