CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 4, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Metabolix, Inc. (Nasdaq:MBLX), an advanced biomaterials company focused on sustainable solutions for the plastics industry, today announced it will be participating in two panel presentations during the HBA Global 2015 conference, a leading event highlighting innovations in the health and beauty sectors. During the panel sessions, Metabolix will present insights into how its PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate polymers) biopolymer materials can enhance sustainability and performance in cosmetic and personal care ingredients and packaging applications. HBA Global is being held June 9-11 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Metabolix is developing biobased PHA biopolymers that are biodegradeable in soil, fresh water, and marine environments. In addition, Metabolix's PHA enhances the property performance of polylactic acid (PLA), a leading biopolymer, including adding strength, toughness, and "softness" in certain packaging applications.
"Metabolix's Mirel® PHA material provides new options for creating new ingredients and packaging designs for the personal care market. The HBA Global conference is an excellent platform to share that knowledge with the industry," said Max Senechal, Metabolix's vice president of strategy and commercial development. "We are encouraged by the developments already underway by forward-thinking companies seeking to utilize new biobased materials in their products and packaging, and believe that Mirel® PHA biopolymers are functionally versatile and well poised to drive further innovation in the industry."
Earlier in 2015, Metabolix and Honeywell signed a global, exclusive technical and commercial alliance to develop PHA biopolymers for cosmetics and personal care applications.
Overview of Metabolix HBA Global 2015 Panel Presentations:
Panel Title: Natural Packaging Design That Screams Wholesome & Pure
Time: Tuesday, June 9, 2015 from 2:45 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Description: John Licata, Technical Service Manager at Metabolix, will participate on a panel to discuss packaging developments for natural products, including the latest options and innovations for sustainable package engineering. Mr. Licata will share relevant Metabolix developments including:
- Metabolix's PHA can be used alone and in combination with other biobased and biodegradable polymers to create more environmentally-responsible packaging solutions for personal care and cosmetic products.
- How Metabolix's PHA copolymer modifiers enhance property performance of PLA including adding strength and "softness" in packaging applications, while maintaining high-biocontent, compostability and clarity.
Panel Title: How to Formulate with Natural Bases & Compounds
Time: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Description: During this panel discussion on innovations in environmentally-friendly ingredients and natural formulation alternatives, John Licata will present relevant developments at Metabolix including its Mirel® PHA biopolymers and their use as exfoliants. This discussion is timely, as several states look to restrict the use of plastic microbeads in personal care products due to plastic accumulation in marine environments. Mr. Licata will address:
- Alternative materials and natural products that are being explored as replacements for petroleum-based plastic microbeads and other cosmetic products.
- How biobased PHA materials that biodegrade rapidly in marine environments also meet the performance requirements for a range of cosmetic and personal products.
Metabolix is an innovation-driven specialty materials company focused on delivering high-performance biopolymer solutions to customers in the plastics industry.
