Human Rights Event Focuses on Freedom of Religion

CLEARWATER, Fla., June 22, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- On June 10, 2015, United Human Rights (UHR) Florida held a luncheon at the Church of Scientology’s Fort Harrison in downtown Clearwater to discuss articles #18 and #19 from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights – Freedom of Thought and Freedom of Expression.

Also attending the event were members of other human rights organizations, including the Hillsborough Human Rights Council, United Nations Association USA, Friends of Human Rights, and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

United for Human Rights President, Gracia Bennish, welcomed everyone and showed a documentary called The Story of Human Rights, which recapped the evolution of human rights on the planet, and the “Freedom of Thought” and “Freedom of Expression” public service announcements developed by UHR’s sister organization Youth for Human Rights (YHR).

Hassan Shibly and Laila Abdelaziz from CAIR were the guest speakers. Ms. Abdelaziz, who addressed developing anti-Islamic laws in the US said, “These laws not only affect Islam, but freedom for all religions.”

Ms. Bennish then showed the We Are All Born Free and Equal YHR public service announcement.

The Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization sponsors events and meetings at the Fort Harrison for non-profits, and were happy to sponsor United for Human Rights to hold the event there. L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, was also a humanitarian who stated, “Human Rights must be made a fact not an idealistic dream.”

Also available at the event was the Church’s Freedom Magazine, issue: “Religion, Why Should We Care?”
