Canadian Ship Owners Ballast Water Initiative Shortlisted for International Award

OTTAWA, Aug. 20, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Shipowners Association's CSA Ballast Water Research and Technology Evaluation Fund has been nominated as a finalist for the Ship Efficiency Awards 2015 in the category of Initiative of the Year. The second annual Ship Efficiency Awards, hosted by Lloyd's Register and organized by Fathom, will recognize and celebrate the organizations and individuals within the maritime sector that excel in efficient operations, implement fresh thinking, and offer proven efficiency benefits and technological innovation.

"It is a great privilege for the members of the Association to receive this recognition amongst so many outstanding initiatives globally" noted the President of CSA, Robert Lewis-Manning. "Domestic shipping in Canada faces unique challenges to meet existing and impending ballast water discharge regulations due to the unique technical and operational constraints of our ships and the diverse environmental conditions in which we sail. Our project initiative is an essential aspect of focusing resources and promoting innovation."

The winners of the Ship Efficiency Awards will be announced during the London International Shipping Week, September 7-11.

The Canadian Shipowners Association represents Canadian domestic vessels operating on the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence River, the Canadian East Coast, and the Canadian Arctic. Over half of the commodities traded are between Canada and the United States. The annual economic benefit of domestic short sea shipping is approximately $35 billion.
