Volunteer Parishioners From the Church of Scientology Help School Kids Learn Truth About Drugs at Back-to-School Event

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Aug. 27, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Parishioners from the Church of Scientology attended an event with residents of Lealman at a Pinellas Police Athletic League (PAL) back-to-school event in the PAL Lealman Sports Complex, where over 500 kids aged between 6 – 14 years old enjoyed fun activities and received free giveaways and supplies for their coming school semester.

From 1 to 4 pm kids were able to pick up free backpacks, school supplies, go on a water slide and receive free educational information on various topics, such as how to cook and prepare meals.

Attending on behalf of the Foundation for a Drug Free World (FDFW) was Rose Kellerer, Executive Director of FDFW Florida Chapter, and Julieta Santagostino, President of FDFW, who introduced the Truth About Drugs program and its materials to the attending youth. The Truth About Drugs is the largest non-government drug education and awareness program in the world.

Ms. Santagostino said, “The most effective weapon in the fight against drug abuse is education and that is why we work so hard to educate as many youth and adults as we can reach using the very effective Truth about Drugs materials.” Ms. Santagostino also pointed to a quote by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, whose extensive research into drugs gave way to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World program and initiative: “Research has demonstrated that the single most destructive element present in our current culture is drugs.”

A total of 400 booklets were distributed and over 100 kids signed their names to be drug-free on the Truth About Drugs pledge.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World

Supported by the Church of Scientology, the Foundation for a Drug-Free World’s Truth About Drugs program is being used by 1,200 organizations, government and law enforcement agencies around the world. Through a worldwide network of volunteers, 50 million drug prevention booklets have been distributed, tens of thousands of drug awareness events have been held in some 180 countries and Truth About Drugs public service announcements have been aired on more than 500 television stations.

On July 11th 2015, the Church of Scientology opened a newly renovated building in the heart of downtown Clearwater to house the new local center for the Foundation for a Drug –Free World. The new Foundation office is open to the public daily from 10 am to 10 pm.

The Church undertook this task in honor of Mr. Hubbard, the founder of the religion who developed a technology to free the human spirit from the harmful effects of drugs and toxins.
