Here are some of the milestones hit throughout this historic week:
The outlook was bleak on Monday as the Dow Jones industrial average sunk more than 1,000 points at the open. But by Wednesday, the Dow had closed up more than 600 points for one of the biggest reversals in U.S. market history (by points).
On Tuesday, the Dow collapsed in the last hour of trading to end more than 200 points in the red.
But the next day, the Dow rallied, ending more than 600 points higher.
