CLEARWATER, Fla., Sept. 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization hosted The Women Empowering Our Community fundraiser for area charities at the historic Fort Harrison’s Crystal Ballroom on September 26th. Organized by local charity advocate Karena Morrison, the event included a dinner by gold medal winning chefs and testimonies from each of the four female-managed charities: Mothers of Minors (helps single mothers with emergency support and life stabilizing education); My Hope Chest (helps uninsured cancer survivors get breast reconstructive surgery); Pace Center for Girls (helps at-risk girls regain integrity and receive life skills); and Clearwater Center for the Arts, (a non-profit community art center).
Ms. Morrison, who was nominated and won second best Local Activist in Tampa Bay Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay 2015 issue, welcomed the guests and said, “We greatly appreciate the generosity of the Church of Scientology for providing this beautiful venue, the delicious meal and the volunteers to help us manage tonight’s event. Because of their generosity, we are enabled to dedicate the majority of the funds raised tonight to four very worthy charities.”
Shelley Jaffe, co-founder of Clearwater Center for the Arts, shared the importance of restoring the arts to a community and how her center has helped spearhead art-inspired venues in the downtown area. The other speakers were: Andrea Clarke, co-founder of Mothers of Minors, Alisa Savoretti founder of My Hope Chest and Carla Mattern, Director of Pace Center for Girls. Award-winning local poet and co-owner of the Clearwater Center for the Arts, Larry Jaffe, shared his poem “Clearwater Blue”.
