Twitter named Omid Kordestani, Google's former chief business officer, as its new executive chairman on Wednesday.
Kordestani had worked at Google since 1999.
Jack Dorsey, Twitter's CEO, took to the social media platform to announce Kordestani's appointment.
Kordestani said in a series of tweets he is excited to work with Dorsey, COO Adam Bain and CFO Anthony Noto.
The announcement came a day after Twitter said it will cut about 8 percent of its global workforce.
"This isn't easy. But it is right. The world needs a strong Twitter, and this is another step to get there," Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said in a letter to employees.
"We are doing this with the utmost respect for each and every person. Twitter will go to great lengths to take care of each individual by providing generous exit packages and help finding a new job."
Shares of Twitter were up more than 1 percent in the premarket.
