Binghamton University Awarded Top Spot in Academic Competition Locally Hosted by NYSSA

NEW YORK, March 11, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A team of students from Binghamton University has been named the winner of the CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted by the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA).

As a local level winner, Binghamton will take part in the CFA Institute Research Challenge Americas Regional competition in Chicago, IL on April 12-13. The winners from the regional level competition will then face off in the CFA Institute Research Challenge Global Final.

The Research Challenge was created in 2002 by NYSSA to educate school students on best practices in financial analysis. Now in its 14th year, the Research Challenge is sponsored internationally by CFA Institute and coordinated locally by CFA Societies like NYSSA.

To advance to the regional competition, the Binghamton team presented original research on First Republic Bank, this year’s subject company, to a panel of industry experts at NYSSA.

Teams from 23 New York metropolitan area schools participated in the local competition. The selection of Binghamton University marked the first time they will be advancing to the regional finals representing NYSSA.

"To be able to compete at this level and advance to the national competition is a great experience. We are excited to be the first team in school history to make it to this stage of the competition and are excited to represent Binghamton University at the national level. We thank NYSSA for hosting the local level of the CFA Institute Research Challenge. Throughout the process, our research and finance knowledge has significantly improved. In addition, the entire process has brought us closer as a group. We are immensely grateful for the guidance of our Industry Mentor, Daniel Barile, CFA ('04), and our Faculty Advisor, Professor Dina Layish, who were a tremendous help throughout the competition." The Binghamton team consisted of students Eric Dohn, Liam Hayes, Brandon Hohenberg, Robert Pim, and Ronick Sanon.

Norwalk, Conn.-headquartered financial data and software company FactSet Research System sponsored the Research Challenge. Follow @CFAchallenge on Twitter for up-to-the-minute information.
