Shares of data storage firm EMC gained more than 3 percent Wednesday despite reporting weaker-than-expected earnings.

EMC posted adjusted earnings per share of 31 cents, below Reuters' forecast of 33 cents.

The company, however, said it expects to complete its transaction with Dell within its originally announced timeframe — between the second and third quarter of 2016.
