‘Angry Birds’ movie catapults to top of box office

"The Angry Birds Movie", based on the popular mobile game, flew to the top of the U.S. box office after earning $39 million in its first weekend in the domestic market.

The film also lined its nest with $112 million generated in foreign markets, grossing a total of $151 million dollars worldwide at the time of writing, according to figures posted on website Box Office Mojo.


The new film, which was produced by Sony Pictures and the animation department of the video game's Finnish developer Rovio, has doubled its reported production budget of $73 million.

The popular mobile game was first released in December 2009 and has been downloaded more than 3 billion times since its debut.
