It comes three weeks after McGregor took to social media to post his own mock-up fight preview poster.

Undefeated boxer Mayweather – now retired – stoked speculation about this potential bout earlier this month when he said he was considering a return to the ring against a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter – thought to be UFC's McGregor.

"Keep your fingers crossed, it may be a boxer versus an MMA fighter," Mayweather told industry website

"It was a name that was shot at me. It may not be a rumor."

Some figures in the industry have appeared to put some backing behind the claims. Trainer Freddie Roach told the "Inside MMA" TV program on Friday that Mayweather came to his Wild Card Boxing Club last week and asked him to train McGregror for the fight if it did happen.

But others have called it hot air. UFC's Nate Diaz, a rival of McGregor, said it was all just a publicity stunt.

"I think the Mayweather thing is a publicity stunt," Diaz told "MMA Hour".

"It's great for both of them. Boxing followers will start following Conor, MMA followers are going to start following Floyd. They're all benefiting, and no one is losing, so they're going to keep the ball rolling."

McGregor has told British media that he wants a "billion-dollar fight" against the American, while Mayweather has said he would want to be paid $100 million to fight the 27-year-old Irishman.

After Mayweather's last fight in September he claimed his professional boxing career, with an unblemished 49 wins, was over.

Meanwhile, McGregor was set to face Diaz in July but was pulled from the event for failing to carry out promotional duties.
