TORONTO, June 17, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Waddington's Auctioneers in Canada posted exceptional results for their semi-annual Asian Art Auction in Toronto on June 13, including establishing a record price for Asian Art sold at auction in Canada.
The record price of $2,992,500 was paid for a Copper Red Lotus Ewer, possibly from the Hongwu Period. Standing 12.1" or 30.7 cm high, the piece attracted wide interest prior to the auction and during the public preview.
Head of Waddington's Asian Art department Chih En Chen noted that the evening's results demonstrated overall strength across all areas, including Chinese paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, Southeast Asian works, and jade and porcelain snuff bottles. A busy saleroom floor, online bidding and multiple phone bids from overseas prompted Chen to observe: "It seems like China is realizing who Waddington's in Canada is."
Waddington's President Duncan McLean added that the price also represents the highest amount achieved for any item of fine art at auction in Canada in 2016.
Other highlights of the auction include a massive bronze figure of Thai, Chien Senf or Sukhothai style Buddha Sakyamuni, 15th/16th century fetching $33,600.
All prices are quoted in CDN and include buyer's premium.
Waddington's Spring Fine Art Auction season continues June 20 with Decorative Arts and International Art. The next major action of Asian Art is scheduled for Fall 2016.
