History says stay defensive in the third quarter

The third quarter begins Friday and investors already rattled by the Brexit vote may want to stay defensive, if history is any guide. We studied all the third quarters during this seven-year bull market and found defensive stocks did the best as investors used this summer period to take a breather from risk-taking.

Using Kensho, a hedge fund analytics tool, we looked at which S&P 500 sector ETFs performed the best in the third period since 2009.
