Priya Manjaly, a student from Boston University double majoring in sociology and medical science, was selected from the applicants as the winner of a $1,000 scholarship for tuition and fees.
With their understanding of the value of education, ElectricityMatch invited students from across the nation to participate in an essay contest where they were asked to discuss their ideas for energy conservation without consumers feeling as though they are sacrificing their comfort.
After reviewing the applications that came in the form of written essays, Manjaly stood out for her concise work and unique approach to conservation.
"The future of energy conservation should be centered on educating the public," Manjaly wrote. "Retailers need to inform their employees about which products are energy-efficient and how their purchase can decrease energy costs in the long run. As human beings who share the earth, it is our responsibility to start a conversation with our friends, family, and neighbors about the little things that every one of us can do to conserve a little energy."
Manjaly aims to enter the Boston University School of Medicine in 2019 to obtain a M.D. She also would like to pursue a Masters in Public Health to use her combined M.D./M.P.H. to bring socioeconomically disadvantaged people access to high quality medical care. Manjaly enjoys public speaking, reading, writing and watching documentaries.
