Santa Barbara Chiropractor Advanced Chiropractic Group Offers Advice and Relief for "Text Neck"

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Aug. 14, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Advanced Chiropractic Group would like to make Santa Barbara residents aware of the benefits of chiropractic care for relief from technology-related health concerns. They are bringing key advice and treatments for reducing pain and helping clients avoid long term neck and spine health issues from “text neck.”

Technology, such as tablets and smartphones, are almost ubiquitous today. Just about everyone has one or both, and it is more common than ever to see people out in public making use of these devices. The “Pokémon Go” craze is adding to this phenomenon, and it is also bringing more of the downside of this technology. “Text neck” is one example of this rise in usage.

While a hunched position during cell phone use is nothing new, the release of the hit game Pokémon Go is causing more and more cell phone users to assume this contracted position more frequently. It is not uncommon to see dozens or even hundreds of people in local parks on weekends meeting to play this addictive game for hours on end. Of course, texting, reading email, browsing the Internet and playing other games on a smartphone can also put users at risk for neck issues and chronic pain.

The Pokémon Go craze is getting people out of their homes and walking around parks in the fresh air, but there are health risks to the game, including “text neck.” Keeping the head and neck bent forward for long periods of time can strain the tendons, muscles and ligaments of the entire area. The result can be neck pain, discomfort and stiffness.

Santa Barbara Chiropractor Advanced Chiropractic Group recommends following certain health and safety protocols while using a cell phone. Holding the device at a higher angle instead of near the chest can help reduce the strain on the neck and back. Taking stretch breaks from the phone can also help; arch the back, neck and shoulders to stretch out the muscles and tendons every 15 to 20 minutes. Stretch the neck directly by tucking the chin downward, then rising and swiveling it in slow rotations.

Dr. Michael Hergenroether and Dr. Michael S. York warn that, “Chronic text neck can lead to more serious issues including irregular muscle growth, bone spurs and degeneration of the cervical spine. It isn’t yet clear what kind of long-term impact text neck will have on people years down the road, as this medical condition is relatively new. Here at Advanced Chiropractic Group, we offer treatments and techniques that can address and prevent chronic issues.”
