Key members of the New Jersey Assembly have started researching whether to bring articles of impeachment against Gov. Chris Christie following early testimony in the Bridgegate trial, according to NBC 4 New York.
Citing a committee chairman familiar with the matter, the TV station said some Assembly members believe the Republican governor had more knowledge about the Fort Lee lane closure scandal. Two of the governor's aides are on trial on charges that they colluded to create traffic jams in 2013 to punish the Democratic mayor of the town because he would not endorse Christie's re-election bid.
Jennifer Sciortino, a spokesperson for the NJ Assembly Democratic Majority Office, did not confirm the report with CNBC.
"The Speaker won't be commenting on the trial or any potential legislative activity until the trial has been completed and all evidence has been presented," Sciortino said in a statement.
GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, a friend of Christie's, has said publicly that the governor knew about the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge before they happened. Christie, who heads Trump's presidential transition team, told CNN that he would testify if subpoenaed but didn't expect to be called as a witness. He has denied having prior knowledge of the scheme.
The committee chairman cited by NBC 4 said the decision on whether to pursue an impeachment charge will be up to Speaker Vincent Prieto, and the chance of the Assembly pursing an impeachment are probably 50-50.
