DOYLESTOWN, Pa., Sept. 27, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- An in-ground pool is a great investment for a family and taking proper care of it is important to ensure it keeps returning on the investment for years to come. Properly winterizing your pool will guarantee it’s in tip-top shape, ready for the next swimming season and to help to prevent setbacks when it’s time to open.
Anthony & Sylvan Pools, the largest in-ground swimming pool and spa builder in the United States, offers some tips for winterizing your pool this year:
Balance the pool water chemistry
Though balancing pool water chemistry is a regular process throughout the pool season, it’s important to do it just before closing the pool for the winter in order to control chemical imbalances throughout the off-season. Be sure to balance your sanitizer level, pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness levels to their recommend ranges so the pool is clean and clear come May of next year.
Skim & vacuum the pool thoroughly
After balancing the water chemistry, it’s important to clean the debris from the pool before closing it up. Skim the top of the water and vacuum the bottom and sides of the pool to make for a quicker spring opening.
Lower the water line below the skimmer
Now that the water is treated and the pool is cleaned, the next step is to lower the water level below the skimmer opening so that it doesn’t freeze during the winter. Some pool covers require the water to be lowered to a different level – it’s important that homeowners consult a professional if they’re unsure what the cover requires.
Cover the pool with a winter cover or a pool safety cover
Finally, it’s time to officially close the pool by putting on a winter or pool safety cover. These covers keep debris out so the pool stays clean when not in use.
If a homeowner doesn’t have the time or ability to properly close the pool on their own, they can still guarantee it’s winterized by hiring a professional to do all of the above.
