How to book dinner reservations with Siri

Todd Haselton | CNBC

Apple's Siri can be used for all sorts of things, but chances are you only use a small fraction of what Apple's smart voice assistant is capable of doing. Maybe you ask it the score of a sports game, or perhaps you might ask a one-off question, like how tall the Empire State Building is. Siri can do so much more, even help you book a restaurant at your favorite restaurant. Here's how.

  • Assuming you already have your smartphone configured to work with Siri, you'll simply need to say "Hey Siri, find me restaurants for dinner tonight." Siri will automatically search near your location. Swap out the time and place for options that fit for you by adding those variables in. You might say "Siri book me a reservation for 6:30pm in Madison, NJ," for example.

  • Or, if you want to get even more specific, you can ask Siri to find a specific cuisine, like Mexican. Siri will provide a list of restaurants, complete with their Yelp review ratings and an indication of how expensive each restaurant is. Tap one that interests you and Siri will provide a glimpse at the restaurant's location, the phone number, Yelp photos and hours.

  • If the restaurant takes reservations, just tap the Yelp or OpenTable button to book one.

  • There are even tips letting users know if the restaurant is kid friendly, or perhaps if it also makes deliveries. To make a reservation, simply select an available time-slot and tap "Make Reservation."

  • Since Siri uses OpenTable and Yelp for the reservations, you can can always open up the OpenTable application to manage or cancel it. Also, if you're already in the car, you can just quickly tap "Directions" and get right on your way.
