Manulife beats 3Q profit forecasts

TORONTO (AP) _ Manulife Financial Corp. (MFC) on Wednesday reported third-quarter earnings of $881.2 million.

On a per-share basis, the Toronto-based company said it had net income of 44 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were 43 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 40 cents per share.

The financial services company posted revenue of $9.52 billion in the period.

Manulife shares have climbed 16 percent since the beginning of the year. The stock has risen 41 percent in the last 12 months.
