China sets yuan mid-point at over 2-year high, breaching key level

SHANGHAI, Jan 24 (Reuters) - China's central bank on Wednesday set its official yuan midpoint to the strongest level in more than two years at 6.3916 per dollar, breaching the key 6.4 per dollar level, supported by broad weakness in the greenback in global markets overnight.

Wednesday's midpoint was 93 pips, or 0.15 percent, firmer than Tuesday's fix of 6.4009 and was the strongest since Dec. 4, 2015.

The dollar extended recent weakness against a basket of major currencies to hit a fresh three-year low on Tuesday, after the euro surged on consumer confidence data that indicated strong momentum in the region's economy. (Reporting by Winni Zhou and John Ruwitch; Editing by Sam Holmes)
