Netflix film 'Roma' and Disney's 'Black Panther' score historic best picture Oscar nominations

The critically acclaimed Netflix film "Roma" landed a best picture Academy Award nomination and several other nods Tuesday morning as the streaming service continued breaking through old Hollywood barriers.

Meanwhile, Disney's "Black Panther," part of the studio's Marvel Cinematic Universe, scored the first-ever best picture nomination for a superhero movie. It was the top-grossing film in North America last year, taking in more than $700 million in ticket sales.

While earlier Netflix films have received Oscar nominations, mostly in the documentary fields, "Roma" is the company's first best picture contender. Before "Roma," Netflix's best showing at the Oscars was "Mudbound," which received nominations in the supporting actress, adapted screenplay, song and cinematography categories last year.
