The jobless rate was 7.0% in July - August and 7.2% for several months previously. Chile's finance minister predicted last week that as many as 300,000 jobs could be lost because of the impact of rioting that started on Oct. 18 in one of Latin America's strongest economies. Ignacio Briones told a legislative committee it was highly likely unemployment would jump 3% in the coming months. More than 40 days of protests started over a hike in public transport fares but have broadened to encompass grievances over low wages, the high cost of living and social inequality.
