(Adds detail on German government order)
FRANKFURT, March 13 (Reuters) - The German government is buying 10,000 ventilators for intensive respiratory care from Draegerwerk in the medical gear maker's largest order ever.
Draegerwerk said in a statement on Friday it would boost output capacity in the northern city of Luebeck and that the order will have an as-yet unspecified positive effect on earnings.
The order is equivalent to a year's production, Draegerwerk said.
In addition, the group will deliver personal protection equipment for hospital staff to the German government, it added.
"Both will help to assure the functionality of the health care system in the case of a further spreading of the Corona virus," it said in a statement.
"It's unusual for a government to order medical gear directly... Normally customers in Germany are hospitals and clinics," a spokesman told Reuters.
