Investors looking for dividend stocks should consider how the credit market views companies before deciding which ones are "a place to hide," according to a new note from Citi.

"Given the expected pressure on company profits, the spotlight is now on balance sheets. This is especially relevant for income investors who are tempted by high yielding stocks but want to avoid dividend cutters," the note said.
