Here's what David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital bought in its record fourth quarter

David Einhorn's Greenlight Capital $1.5 billion fund had its best quarter ever at the end of 2020. Here's what the widely followed investor bought and sold during that period. Einhorn's funds gained 25% in the fourth quarter as the company's long positions, including some bets on newly public companies, offset a weak period for Greenlight's short positions, according to an investor letter obtained by CNBC in January . A Securities and Exchange Commission filing released Tuesday revealed how big some of those IPO positions are along with other brand-new stakes. Among the fund's new investments were a $40.6 million position in Danimer Scientific and a $34.1 million stake in FuboTV , the filing showed. Greenlight also bought $33.1 million worth in Concentrix . FuboTV and Danimer Scientific went public last year. Concentrix was spun out of Synnex in December. Einhorn said in the January letter he believes FuboTV's sports-focused streaming television product could benefit from increasing sports-gambling activity. He added that Danimer's biodegradable plastic is already proving attractive to large companies worried about their environmental footprint. The fund also added a $14.2 million position in security company ADT . Greenlight also took new stakes in Sonos , Aequi Acquisition , Echostar , and New Providence Acquisition , the filing showed. Greenlight increased positions in Atlas Air Worldwide , CNX , Dillard's , Resideo Technologies and Teck Resources . A $28.9 million stake in Consol Energy was shown though investors learned about it in an earlier filing this year. Take a look at Greenlight Capital's top holdings as of Dec. 31: One of Greenlight's bets that paid off was on real estate company Green Brick Partners, which jumped 42% last quarter and ended the year as one of the hedge fund's top five long positions. Brighthouse Financial , AerCap Holdings and Change Healthcare were other top holdings that performed well. Einhorn also saw a strong return from Resideo Technologies , a residential HVAC and security company that was formerly part of Honeywell. Shares rose by more than 300% between April and the end of the year, and Greenlight believes the company can continue to beat expectations and raise guidance, according to the investor letter. Greenlight dissolved positions in Console Coal Resources, CryoLife, Graham Holdings, Gulfport Energy, Ingredion, Intel, Kennedy-Wilson, PVH and Vapotherm. Einhorn has traditionally done well as a short seller, betting that stocks would decline. However, the short bets were losers for Greenlight during the fourth quarter. Einhorn said in last month's letter there are several "story stocks" that were disconnected from reality even though the tech sector overall is not in a bubble. Greenlight finished 2020 with a return of 5.2%, according to the letter, well below that of the S & P 500. — with reporting from CNBC's Jesse Pound and Thomas Franck.
