Investing Club: What we're watching Monday afternoon — the word of the day is buybacks

What we're watching Monday afternoon It has been another volatile day in the markets and even though we're ready to make some moves and have plenty of cash available (thanks to our sales from Friday and Monday), no stocks have hit our levels yet. We don't want to force a trade if nothing is there and we'll never buy just to buy. So we're perfectly fine with sitting on our hands for the time being; staying disciplined during times of heightened levels of volatility and uncertainty. Qualcomm (QCOM) CEO Cristiano Amon appeared on CNBC's "Tech Check" on Monday to talk about the tech giant's exposure to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He also made some of the product announcements at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was fighting to stay green — going between slightly positive and slightly negative Monday after — when many of its semiconductor peers were down. Is this its new $8 billion share buyback program being put to work? Speaking of buybacks, Linde (LIN) announced a new $10 billion share repurchase program. The new program is double the last one. The U.K. industrial gas company also increased its quarterly dividend by 10% to $1.17 per share, raising the implied dividend yield to roughly 1.6%. When we added to our position last week at around this price, we said at the bottom of our report that buybacks news was on the way based on what management said on the earnings call. Three new 52-week highs in the portfolio today: Chevron (CVX), Devon Energy (DVN) and Nucor (NUE). Common theme? Exposure to commodities.
