Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly decided to run in the March 2024 presidential election, according to six sources cited by Reuters. With little to no opposition in Russia — with prominent Putin critics jailed or having fled the country — it's likely that Putin will be in office until at least 2030.
In other news, Russia's Ministry of Defense released a video on Sunday that appeared to show a nuclear-capable ballistic missile being test-fired from the country's newest nuclear submarine.
The ministry posted a video on Telegram that it said showed a successful a test launch of a Bulava sea-based intercontinental ballistic missile from the new Imperator Aleksandr III submarine.
The test came after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law last week withdrawing Russia's ratification of a global treaty banning the live testing of nuclear weapons.
In other news, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conceded that a Russian strike on an awards ceremony that left an estimated 20 Ukrainian soldiers and officers dead was a tragedy that "could have been avoided."
