NY Controller Goes to Court Amid Resignation Reports

State Comptroller Alan Hevesi showed up at court in Albany Friday amid reports that he will resign.

A grand jury has been looking into charges that Hevesi used state employees to chauffeur his wife. A law enforcement official familiar with the case says Hevesi will resign to avoid an indictment under an agreement with District Attorney David Soares.

In October, the state Ethics Commission said Hevesi violated law when he used staffers to chauffeur his wife beginning in 2003. The panel said Hevesi apparently had no intention of repaying the state for the three years of service until it was revealed during the elections this year.

Despite the revelation, Hevesi was reelected in November, garnering 57% of the vote.
