Use your credit card to fight Greek tax cheats: Tourism chief
Greece's tourism chief has appealed to tourists planning to visit the crisis-hit country this year to use credit cards as much as possible to fight tax evasion, The Guardian reports.
Andreas Andreadis said paying by plastic could make it easier to track down evaders of the latest planned rise in sales tax as part of an attempt to reform the country's economy.
"What we are saying is that on cash transactions above a certain level please use your credit cards," Andreadis said to the newspaper.
"That way it forces services and shops to declare it on the cash register and issue receipts."
Greece is in a race against time to secure much needed finance and renegotiate its debt repayments so that it can avoid default and possible exit from the euro zone.
