Hulu launches ad-free service for $11.99 a month

The video streaming company said Wednesday it has launched an ad-free option for users for $11.99 a month, $4 more than Hulu Plus.

"Many of our customers have asked us for a commercial free option, and so today we are excited to introduce just that," Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins said in a release.

The announcement came three days after the company and cable network Epix said they had signed a multi-year deal that would bring Epix films to Hulu from Oct. 1. The companies did not disclose terms of the deal.

These films include "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "World War Z," and "Transformers: Age of Extinction," which had been available on rival streaming service company Netflix.

Hulu is a joint venture owned by Comcast's NBCUniversal, 21st Century Fox's Fox Broadcasting, and Walt Disney's ABC. (Disclosure: NBCUniversal is the parent company of CNBC.)
