Reebok faces backlash over Alien Stomper shoes
Fans of the "Alien" movie franchise hoping to complete their ultimate Ripley costume had less than 40 minutes to snag a pair of Reebok's limited-edition Alien Stompers online on Tuesday.
The futuristic pair of kicks, modeled after the shoes worn by Sigourney Weaver in the 1986 sequel "Aliens," sold out in just 38 minutes online, but the blowout sale's technical difficulties managed to irk a lot of hopeful shoppers.
Customers eagerly awaiting their chance to purchase a pair of the Stompers faced several technical issues when checking out on the company's website.
To compound Reebok's worries, several social media users complained that the Alien Stompers, which were modeled after a pair worn by a pioneer action-movie heroine, were only available in men's sizes.
"The Alien Stomper was mis-categorized on our US website as a men's shoe," a spokesman for Reebok told CNBC. "While size availability varied by market, the Alien Stomper is a unisex style and was produced in sizes (US Men's) 3.5 – 12, which is a typical size range for a unisex model."
