Alyssa Milano: Routines can hurt, limit you
Alyssa Milano started acting at age 7 and has pursued many different interests throughout her career.
The 43-year-old Milano has served as an ambassador for UNICEF, something she said "brought a whole other side of fulfillment into my heart, into my being" and made her realize "how important it is to diversify who you are as a human and all the things that make you happy."
Milano made a pilot for CBS, but the network recently decided it won't be moving forward with the show. She also hosts Lifetime's "Project Runway All Stars" and has a sports fan clothing line called Touch. Milano says she's able to juggle all these responsibilities because she keeps a fluid schedule.
"I almost feel like having a routine hurts that because you need the flexibility of time to accomplish everything in one day," she said.
The other important thing to maintain balance is to live in the moment, she says.
"The best advice I could give about balance and trying to figure all of that out is every day, you focus on the task at hand," she said.
"That means being present in the moment, in what you're doing at that time because you can't obviously spread yourself too thin and it's important to try to figure out that balance," Milano said.
The actress said that trying to do too many things at the same time and not focusing on the immediate tasks makes it too difficult to pursue diverse interests while maintaining balance.
"I kind of just take it one day at a time and try to do the best that I can in every moment because every day is different in my life," Milano said.
But just because balance is hard doesn't mean that people should shy away from pursuing all of their passions.
"If you want to change, if you want to evolve, if you want to grow, you have to do something different," she said. "There's that great quote: 'If you always do what you've always done, you'll always be who you've always been.'"
