Technology companies are about to enter a golden era of mergers and acquisitions, thanks to a key game-changer in the industry, one technology investor told CNBC.

"The reason I think we're entering a new era of M&A is that you have very big chip stacks by a group of companies," angel investor Jason Calacanis told CNBC's "Squawk Alley, referencing a recent blog post comparing companies' "stack size" approach to M&A to the escalating stakes in a poker game. "They've gotten used to buying bigger and bigger things, and the bigger things they've bought have actually worked out."
