Trump raised $5 million on day of Mexico visit, campaign says
Donald Trump's campaign raised $5 million on Aug. 31, the day of the Republican nominee's whirlwind trip to Mexico, the campaign said Thursday.
That marks about 5 percent of the $90 million raised by the campaign and its joint fundraising arm with the Republican Party during August. It was unclear if that sum was the campaign's biggest for a single day, but it has previously sent emails to supporters with fundraising goals of up to $2 million in a day.
A Trump campaign spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether the $5 million was its biggest single-day haul.
Trump visited the United States' southern neighbor last month after harshly criticizing the country and its people throughout his campaign. Trump has touted the success of the visit, though Democrats have criticized his trip and his ability to handle diplomacy.
It also prompted confusion after Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said he told Trump Mexico would not pay for Trump's proposed border wall. Trump had said the pair did not discuss payment during the meeting in Mexico City and later renewed his claims that Mexico would fund the barrier.
