Thanksgiving fliers are getting some welcome news this holiday season

The 3.7 million people that AAA says will fly during Thanksgiving weekend have one more thing to be thankful for: low airfares.

Domestic airfares remain low this Thanksgiving, with the average price coming in at $214 last month. Compared with last year, prices are up by about 1 percent but are down 14 percent from two years ago, when jet fuel prices were sharply higher.

The low fares are prompting more people to fly: Thanksgiving air travel is expected to rise 1.6 percent to 3.69 million. In turn, this is sparking questions about whether the TSA will be prepared for more fliers.

"This is the busiest travel weekend of the year, and travelers should prepare for very long lines regardless of what's happening with the TSA," said Jeanenne Tornatore, a senior editor for Orbitz.com.

Amid low airfares, airlines are getting their own good news ahead of the holidays. Since the election, airline stocks are up 10.4 percent, according to FactSet data.
