Billionaire fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger says he wants to sell his palatial penthouse at New York's Plaza Hotel for $50 million due to a change in lifestyle.
"[My wife and I] are living on an airplane half the time now because we're traveling all over the world. But this [penthouse] has served us very well for over 10 years," Hilfiger told CNBC.
Nearly every room inside the all-American designed duplex is an homage to the historic hotel, with detailed reminders of the Plaza's glory days — from the napkins and plates Tommy chose for the dining room, to the photographs in the powder room of the famous people who once stayed here before the Hilfiger family moved in.
"We love the Old World charm of the building and the heritage," said Hilfiger.
You can get a full tour of Hilfiger's 6,000-square-foot designer digs on an upcoming episode of CNBC's "Secret Lives of the Super Rich" Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Take a look inside:
Just off the great room is the living room with breathtaking vistas of Central Park.
"Literally everyone who moves to the city wants that quintessential view [of the park]," said listing agent Nikki Field with Sotheby's International Reality. "Well, here it is on steroids."
Steps away from the home's retro-themed kitchen is "The Eloise Dome."
That's right: Hilfiger dedicated the family's tea room to one of the Plaza Hotel's most famous residents, Eloise, from the famed children's book "Eloise at the Plaza." He even commissioned the book's illustrator, Hilary Knight, to handpaint the walls.
The fashion designer says his favorite part of this palatial penthouse is upstairs — just off the master suite and past a door that leads to his private terrace.
"I like waking up in the morning, and my wife and I enjoy having coffee on the terrace overlooking the park," Hilfiger said. "It's serene, it's quiet and it's majestic."
So what makes the Plaza's crown jewel residence worth a cool $50 million?
Tommy sums it up like this: "Location, location location. … They'll never build another building like this. And they'll never build another apartment like this — ever — anywhere."
