Online Dating's Most Unusual Web Sites
Online dating has been one of the great success stories of the internet—one of those businesses which, like ebay, surprised tech analysts as the internet took off. I know several people who found life partners through sites like eHarmony and Match.com.
Published reports claim that 40 million Americans have tried online dating, and the industry is now valued at over $1 billion. It may even be bigger than porn.
As with all profitable businesses, everyone wants to jump in and carve out a niche. That's led to an astonishing number of diverse web sites connecting people from every conceivable background with every conceivable interest.
Like Daily Diapers.
Daily Diapers is a web site for "adult babies" who favor wearing adult diapers. Not because they need to. Because they want to. The dating part of the site allows you to post photos, but be warned, this is NOT for babies. Or children. Or squeamish adults. NOT. (And so you'll have to find the web site on your own—because of the content)
You're wondering how I found this site, right? Um... research?
Actually, someone I know wrote a blog about unusual dating websites (he's a young man of prime dating age who apparently has a lot of time on his hands).
He also found "Date Me, Date My Pet",which seeks to bring pet lovers together, though a dating advisor warns, "Does your date get along great with animals, but treats YOU like a worn-out dog toy?"
Farmers Only boasts 100 marriages among like-minded farm folks, because "city folks just don't get it".
Like "Twilight" and "True Blood"? "This site is your sanctuary," proclaims the home page for Vampire Personals, "available to all members of the Vampire Community. If you are unsure if you fit into this category, this place is probably not for you."
The list is seemingly endless: Woman Behind Bars, and STD Friends. There's "Date a Little",which is for dating little people, Tall Friends, for dating tall people, and Obese Dating.
My favorite: Poker Faces,for poker players with lying faces who want to meet other people with lying faces. I call that regular dating.
Believe me, I am not passing judgment. We all have our crosses to bear, or interests others don't understand. Why shouldn't we seek a little eharmony (as long as it's legal and among consenting adults)?
For example, mental illness is no joke. Now, those who suffer can find love at No Longer Lonely. "We are a welcoming community that understands the trials and pitfalls of managing a mental illness," the site says. "Find friends or seek romantic relationships knowing that everyone on this site has some form of mental illness."
There's someone for everyone out there. At least online.
