BP Named Worst Company in America
On the one-year anniversary of the Gulf oil spill, BP has been named the "Worst Company in America" by Consumerist.
This year was the first time the British energy giant was nominated in the annual "March Madness" style contest, where readers vote on which company they most revile.
Consumerist says BP won not just because 11 men died and all that oil poured into the Gulf, but also "(f)or the cost-cutting efforts that ultimately led to this catastrophe—along with others in Texas and Alaska that have killed more than a dozen more employees, injured hundreds and leaked toxic chemicals into the air and water."
However, the final tally wasn't a blowout. BP barely beat out Bank of America for the title with less than 51 percent of the vote, called "the slimmest (margin of victory) of any Worst Company championship death match in the tournament's six-year history."
Therefore, for the first time, Consumerist isn't just giving out a Golden Poo award to first-placed BP, but Bank of America will receive "our first-ever Silver Poo. It will go nicely in the bank's trophy cabinet alongside the Golden Poo it inherited when it bought previously WCIA champ Countrywide."
