Pops & Drops: Molycorps, Jack in the Box and More

Following are the day’sbiggest winners and losers. Find out why shares of United Continental and Jack in the Box popped while Big Lots dropped.

POPS (stocks that jumped higher)

Melco Crown Entertainment (MPEL) popped 3%. CEO Lawrence Ho soothed investors’ fears regarding a rival casino set to open across the street from one of its resort.

United Continental (UAL) popped 3%. Seven months after the merger, the airlines said passengers can now shop for flights on either carrier's website when traveling on United or Continental.

Molycorp (MCP) popped 4%. China’s Ministry of Commerce said it will impose new export quotas on iron alloys containing more than 10 percent rare earths. This stock is way too volatile for Steve Grasso. He suggests waiting until the stock breaks above its 50 day, which is about $62.70.

Jack in the Box (JACK) popped 6%. The fast-food chain reported same-stores sales increased 0.8 percent in the second quarter, ahead of expectations. “The short interest is going to continue to grow.” Guy Adami, “I think they are going to lose. I think the stock trades at $24.”

PetSmart (PETM) popped 8%. The pet products retailer posted better-than-expected first-quarter results, beating analysts’ estimates.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) popped 4%. The airline carrier announced more capacity cuts on Thursday to offset rising fuel prices.

Baidu.com (BIDU) popped 3%. Social networking stocks were on the move thanks to LinkedIn’s blockbuster IPO Thursday.

DROPS (stocks that slid lower)

Big Lots (BIG) dropped 11%. The retailer took itself off the market after failing to attract high enough bids.
