TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 22, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Traffic Solutions (ATS) recognizes National School Bus Safety Week on Oct. 22-26, 2012, reminding motorists to exercise caution when school buses are stopped and boarding or disembarking children. Schools and law enforcement nationwide are using the week as an opportunity to highlight the importance of school bus safety. ATS has developed a campaign, Flashing Red, Kids Ahead, to inform motorists about the laws and safe practices to take when approaching a school bus.
Every school day in the United States, more than 70,000 motorists illegally pass school buses as they stop to let students on and off. CrossingGuard®, ATS' school bus stop arm technology (http://www.atsol.com/solutions/school-bus-safety/) is designed to help school districts address this growing problem and inform their communities about the consequences of passing a stopped school bus.
"As a leader in road safety solutions, ATS is pleased to participate in National School Bus Safety Week to bring attention to this important public safety topic and make streets safer for school children," said James Tuton, ATS CEO. "We also want to recognize school administrators and police for their commitment to the safe transportation of their students."
Each year about 474,000 school buses hit the road transporting over 25 million children to and from school. While those big yellow buses are one of the safest forms of transportation, it is still important for motorists to be extra vigilant when sharing the road.
