CCAGW Agrees With Romney on Threat Imposed by the Debt

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) issued a statement in support of former Massachusetts Governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s emphasis on the threats posed by the United States’ massive debt during last night’s debate. When asked about the decisions made by the Obama administration during the “Arab Spring,” Gov. Romney stated that promoting peace abroad “requires us to be strong, and that begins with a strong economy here at home, and unfortunately, the economy is not strong. When the president of Iran, Ahmadinejad, says that our debt makes us not a great country, that’s a frightening thing. The former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff – Admiral Mullen – said that our debt is the biggest national security threat we face.”

“At CCAGW, we have been trumpeting the national security implications of mounting debt for years, and it is refreshing to hear a presidential candidate emphasize how the $16.1 trillion debt ties the hands of those who would defend our country,” said CCAGW President Tom Schatz. “The bottom line is that reducing the debt by cutting wasteful spending makes it easier to pay for the essential functions of government, particularly national defense.

“Gov. Romney’s remarks on the debt and its national security implications are part of a recurring theme throughout his campaign, in stark contrast to President Obama’s abject failure to lay out a credible plan to reduce the debt in his second term in office,” said CCAGW President Tom Schatz. “Gov. Romney has been clear in regard to the moral imperative of not burdening our children and grandchildren with a massive debt. The governor has promoted many of the spending cuts in Citizens Against Government Waste’s Prime Cuts, including reducing improper payments, repealing the Davis-Bacon Act, cutting the federal workforce, privatizing Amtrak, and repealing Obamacare. Taxpayers should support Gov. Romney’s vision for a government that returns to its core functions while eliminating duplication, overlap, and waste, making the nation more prosperous and secure.”

The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste is the lobbying arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, the nation’s largest nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.
