Company restores service to more than 500,000 customers in less than 72 hours
PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Hurricane Sandy now ranks as the most damaging storm in PECO history – interrupting electric service to more than 850,000, or roughly 1 out of every 2 PECO customers. An army of 3,500 PECO crews, contractors and employees from other utilities, are working tirelessly and have successfully restored service to more than 500,000 customers by Wednesday afternoon.
At 3 p.m., Wednesday afternoon, about 350,000 customers remain without service. Specifically:
- Bucks County = 161,000
- Chester County = 14,000
- Delaware County = 19,000
- Montgomery County = 121,000
- Philadelphia County = 35,000
Based on our assessment of the extent of damage, PECO expects to be able to restore service to approximately 80-90 percent of customers impacted by the storm by Friday night. Service for most of the remaining customers should be restored during the weekend. Some customers, in the most damaged and isolated areas may be without electric service until next week.
“More than 8.2 million people lost electric service all along the East coast following Hurricane Sandy. Our PECO crews and supplemental field forces have been working in very difficult, dangerous conditions making tremendous progress restoring electric service to our customers,” said Craig Adams, PECO president and CEO. “We will continue to work as safely and effectively as possible to restore service to customers as soon as we can. We know our customers are inconvenienced when they are without service. Given the massive destruction caused by this fierce storm, we ask our customers to be patient and thank them for their understanding as we continue our work.”
While visiting a PECO work site today, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett said, “Utility crews from across the state, including those from PECO, are doing an incredible job to restore service to customers impacted by Hurricane Sandy. This is a huge effort, and we appreciate the support we are receiving from utilities across the country to help restore electric service to customers in the Commonwealth.”
While clean up continues, customers should stay away from downed power lines and damaged equipment. Always assume PECO’s equipment is energized, even if there is an outage in your neighborhood. Customers in flooded areas are also reminded to stay away from any flood-covered electric equipment and never enter basements that are flooded.
