Steve Branscum Named Group Vice President, Coal Business Group
Katie Farmer Named Group Vice President, Consumer Products Group
FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BNSF Railway today announced that Steve Bobb has been named executive vice president and chief marketing officer, with responsibility for BNSF’s sales, marketing, customer service, economic development, and business unit activities. He succeeds John Lanigan who has decided to retire effective Jan. 15, 2013.

Bobb has served as group vice president, Coal Business Group, since April 2006. Previously, he was general manager of BNSF’s Texas Division.

Bobb was appointed vice president, Business Unit Operations and Support, in March 2004. Before that, he was group vice president, Agricultural Products.
Bobb began his career in the railroad industry in 1987 with Burlington Northern in information systems. From 1988 to 1992, he held several business analysis, planning and yield management positions. In 1992, Bobb moved from director, Yield Management, to director, Marketing, Minerals business unit. Bobb was responsible for the Chicago field marketing group until 1995 when he was promoted to general director, Chemicals business unit. He was appointed vice president, Minerals business unit, in June 1996 and vice president, Chemicals business unit, in October 1996. He was named group vice president, Agricultural Products, in June 1999.
He was named vice president, Business Unit Operations and Support in March 2004. In this capacity he led BNSF’s intermodal and automotive hub operations and planning; freight car planning and distribution; and demurrage, storage and extended services functions, and coordinated Marketing capital and expenses.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University. He attended the Advanced Management Program and International Senior Managers Program, Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.

Lanigan started with BNSF as executive vice president and chief marketing officer in January 2003. Prior to joining BNSF, he served as president and CEO of Logistics.com, Inc. He previously spent more than 16 years with Schneider National, Inc., holding a number of positions including president, Transportation Sector, and chief operating officer. Prior to starting his transportation career, Lanigan served in the U.S. Coast Guard and he retired from the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve with more than 20 years of active duty and reserve service.
Branscum, Group Vice President, Coal
Steve Branscum has been named group vice president, Coal Business Group, succeeding Steve Bobb. Branscum has served as group vice president, Consumer Products, since June 1999. Prior to that, he served as vice president, Intermodal Marketing, since July 1996.
Branscum began his career with the former Santa Fe in 1980 in the Industrial Engineering department where he held various positions in Cleburne, Texas; Kansas City, Kan.; and Topeka, Kan. In 1989, he was named general director, Intermodal Planning and Control, at Chicago, Ill., when the Intermodal Business Unit was formed. He moved to the position of general director, Intermodal Equipment, in 1991 and was appointed assistant vice president, Intermodal Equipment and Hub Operations, in 1992. Branscum was promoted to the role of assistant vice president, Intermodal Hub Operations, in January 1996. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from New Mexico State University and completed graduate studies at the University of Missouri, Washburn University, and the Advanced Executive Program, Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University.
Farmer, Group Vice President, Consumer Products
Katie Farmer has been promoted to group vice president, Consumer Products, succeeding Steve Branscum. In this capacity she is responsible for the commercial activities of BNSF’s intermodal and automotive business. Farmer was appointed vice president, Domestic Intermodal, in June 2010. Prior to that she was vice president, Sales, Industrial Products, where she was responsible for leading the carload sales effort across the U.S. and Canada.
Farmer began her career in the railroad industry with the Burlington Northern in 1992 as a management trainee in Fort Worth, Texas. She held a variety of positions in sales and marketing in the Chemical, Plastic and Minerals business units. She also held positions in Finance, Customer Solutions and Network Operations. In 1998, after a field sales position in Houston, Texas, she returned to Fort Worth as director, Plastics Marketing. In 2001, she was appointed to general director, Chemical Products Sales. In 2002, she was appointed to the position of assistant vice president, Carload Equipment, supporting the Carload, Agricultural Products and Coal business units. Farmer holds Bachelor of Business Administration and Master of Business Administration degrees from Texas Christian University.
